Wrapped around the northern shore of Lake Geneva and stretching to Lake Neuchâtel, Vaud is the spiritual home of Chasselas — a grape that elsewhere is barely taken seriously, but here becomes a subtle, mineral, terroir-driven white. Its crown is Lavaux, 830 hectares of steep stone terraces dating to the 11th century, a UNESCO World Heritage site warmed by "three suns": the sky, the lake's reflection, and the heat stored in the walls. Second-largest Swiss region. Roughly 3,800 ha.
The only region is Switzerland producing more Whites than Reds with 65%, lead by 59% of Chasselas.
