South of the Alps, facing Italy, Ticino feels Mediterranean and is overwhelmingly Merlot — more than 80% of plantings — making everything from structured barrel-aged reds to a distinctive white "Bianco di Merlot." The mountain of Monte Ceneri splits it into the cooler Sopraceneri in the north and the warmer Sottoceneri around Lugano in the south. Roughly 1,000 ha.

Merlot only arrived here around 1906, after phylloxera.
