Anjou-Saumur

Chenin in every guise and the natural-wine heartland.

Schist around Angers, tuffeau limestone around Saumur. Chenin Blanc runs the full range here — bone-dry Savennières, honeyed Coteaux du Layon and Quarts-de-Chaume, sparkling Saumur — while Cabernet Franc makes fresh reds and rosé. This is ground zero for French natural wine.

Nicolas Joly made Savennières a biodynamic icon.
