Château Kalian
"When the grapes are of high quality, the winemaking becomes minimalist." — Kilian Griaud
Their story
Anne and Alain Griaud were not from wine. They fell for the Périgord and in 1992 bought a small vineyard in Monbazillac — named Kalian, a portmanteau of their children Katell and Kilian. Kilian trained in oenology, became winemaker in 2007, and led the estate through organic certification in 2012. Today Kalian covers 13.8 hectares of clay-limestone soils. Every green operation is done by hand; harvesting is manual with careful sorting. Their Monbazillac has won gold at the Concours Général Agricole de Paris.

Once or twice a year we take a small group to the land where these wines are made. Days with the family, lunch in the cellar, no jargon.
