High on the upper reaches of the Loire near Roanne, this small appellation grows a local strain of Gamay (Gamay Saint-Romain) on south-facing granite slopes — geologically closer to Beaujolais than to the rest of the Loire. Fresh, peppery, mineral reds from a cluster of small, often organic growers.
